The North Kona district of the Big
Island is comprised of vast, coastal lava fields rising to the more
lush and tropical hillsides at higher elevations-- foothill country
on the slopes of 8271 ft. Mt. Hualalai. Its reliably sunny and dry "Gold
Coast" centers around the old fishing village of Kailua, famous for
its International Billfish Tournament in August and the Ironman Triathlon
in October. Kailua-Kona is the center for all of West Hawaii, offering
unmatched opportunities for shopping, dining and ocean activities. Upslope
from Kailua is the lovely artists' colony of Holualoa, also the beginning
of the 20-mile-long belt of Kona coffee country stretching south between
the 1000- and 2000-ft elevation on the slopes of Hualalai.
